Sorry, but I must disagree. That is a grand generalization that cannot possibly be 100% true. Belting may be popular, but it is not a requirement - at least not for everyone.
Imagine this scenario: An auditioner walks into college/university auditions and sings a legit, beautiful ballad followed by a sassy uptempo (that happens to fit nicely into her chest/mix.) Beautiful voice, perfectly prepared, excellent acting of the songs. You are suggesting that the audition panel would:
a) cross her off the list because she didn't belt; or b) say, "I'm sorry, did you prepare a belting selection?"
I'm not as familiar with the American colleges, but here in Canada most of our programs pride themselves in training a diverse range of performers, ready to take on the diverse array of roles available. Belters may form part of that mix, but certainly not all. Given two otherwise equally talented candidates I can see how belting could be an influence, but certainly not a deal-breaker in-and-of itself.
As an aside, my belt did not develop fully until I was in my early twenties. So if the programs I applied for had been this narrow-minded, I certainly would not be where I am today.
