Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/04/22 15:17 I am doing Seussical Sr. right now and the CD had the "Cat in the Hat" songs pitched in two keys: one for a male cat and one for a female cat. I am not sure what the Jr. version does.

Mayzie is this gregarious bombshell of a character, while Gertrude is a frump. I think Gertrude is a better role and has better songs. PLUS, I think that Gertrude is on-stage longer (not that THAT is ever a consideration).

Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/04/22 22:22 The Cat's songs for the Bway Jr version of Seussical are written in one key, "suitable for either a male or female actor"

Seussical is so versatile in casting, since none of the characters really have a set age. It depends on the age range of kids you have auditioning.

As far as Gertrude and Maizy go, I am no expert, but I do believe Gertrude is more of a "lead" than Maizy is. However, Maizy is really fun and crazy to play.

Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/04/23 11:47 The poster above is right, Gertrude is more of a lead and central character than Mayzie. As to the fun, I won't ever get to know so I won't comment. I don't know what the Seussical Jr. score is like, but the standard Seussical show is quite versatile as also mentioned above. Currently Auditioning for: Narnia

Currently involved with: Nothing...

Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/04/23 19:41 Also, as far as the score goes, mostly all the jr shows do is cut a song or two that isn't absolutely crucial to the plot, shorten some songs, and sometimes simplify harmonies and such. Not to say the music is easy, it's just easier than the Orig. version. I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!

Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/04/24 11:49 Yea, there are rules about doing "Jr." versions of shows. They are strictly for "Youth" theatre groups to do. According to the "Rights" of the show, they are not suppose to be performed by adults. That means there is an age limit on the casting. I can't remember exactly what that age limit is - something like anyone over 21 is not suppose to be in the cast. Otherwise, they are suppose to do the regular version. I believe the cost of purchasing the Rights to Jr. versions is cheaper. Without the rules, most folks would do the Jr. version to save money. So, they try to keep tabs on them. I used to purchase the Rights for an elementary school and the company would always want to know exactly who was going to perform the show.

Re:Seussical jr? - 2008/05/04 23:24 My camp did Seussical Jr. this past summer, and I can tell you that either Mayzie or Gertrude is good. If you're a belter, go for Mayzie, Gertrude's more a soprano.

They cut out the whole General Genghis Khan Schmitz thing and a lot of the songs are shorter. Solla Sollew, It's Possible, and Oh the Thinks You Can Think remain intact (mostly for the last one, they cut out one Cat line), but all the other songs are shorter.

In terms of whether or not you're young enough... 19's pushing it. We did it with 10 - 14 year olds, but that's just the age range of the kids in this part of camp. I bet you could get away with it though, it depends on the production.
