Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/19 02:06 My high school Director today told me today that Jack has red hair and that since I'm Asian, I have to dye my hair red.......

As an actor,do I have the right to say no?

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/19 02:35 Its somewhat of a precarious situation. Normally small things like that wouldn't matter, but they explicitly say in the show he has "carrot top hair." I would ask your director if getting a wig would be a viable option before dying your hair. Do you have really dark hair? If you do, dying the shade of red as suggested in the show would be nigh impossible anyway. Micah---

Well, it's not impossible it would just require bleaching before it could be dyed.

I agree, I would ask if a wig or *cringe* that spray can stuff would be acceptable first.

But to answer your question, you DO have the right to say no, unless you were told that you would be required to dye it at the audition. If you were warned, then it would be rude to back out. But if you say no, you have to be prepared for the consequences, whatever they may be.

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/19 18:18 Just have to throw something in about coloured hair spray.. Not only does it not really come in any natural colours, it rubs off on costumes, and anything else your hair might come in contact with.

As this is highschool, I think the first thing you have to do is ask if your parents would even allow you to dye your hair. If not, then that's end of story.

You will need to bleach your hair first, no way around that. So even if you use a temp dye, your hair will not return to the way it was. It would have to grow out again. You could dye over it again afterward if you wanted, though, but the likelyhood of matching your natural hair exactly is slim.

I'm a great advocate of using wigs for shows, but they do have to be high quality, which aren't necessarily cheap, unless you can buy online (ie: have the time to wait for it to arrive and access to a credit card). But, if you want some wig advice, feel free to ask!

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/23 14:51 If you were warned ahead of time, then you shouldn't say no. Otherwise, you can but it is nice to do it anyway.

I just got finished with being Jack, my hair is still red and that is a laugh with the people I did the show with. Eventually it is going to get cut off but until then I have my pseudo-carrot top hair. The people who played Jack's Mother and Baker's Wife asked if they could do the dying even, so I didn't have to worry about it and they had a fun time - did a really thorough job of it too.

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/25 08:14 I would llike to add my voice to the wig chorus (unless dying was mentioned at auditions). But, as has been mentioned, a higher-quality wig makes an enormous difference. (sic: people often compliment me on how natural my "hair" looks when I'm not my natural red on stage...it's because I am willing to spend the bucks for a good wig!).

One thing if you do go the wig route and buy it online, though: make sure the wig is adjustable. If it isn't, you'll have to measure your head to get the correct size.

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/25 13:55 I've never seen a high quality wig that isn't adjustable The only ones I've seen that aren't are cruddy Halloween wigs!

I buy all of my synthetic wigs from Asia, and usually only have to spend between $20-40, no matter the length, colour or style. It usually takes two weeks to arrive, so that has to be planned ahead.

The best fibres are Kanekalon or Toyokalon. If whoever you're buying from online can't tell you what the fibre is, avoid it. Of course, that's moot if you want to shell out the bucks for a human hair wig.

If you're buying locally, make sure you can touch the wig and see how fine and soft the fibres are. Halloween wigs have thicker fibres, which is what makes them cheap and not so easy to work with. Rule of thumb: if it comes in a bag, it's not a great wig

Re:Jack's Hair in Into the Woods - 2008/04/25 20:40 I'm going to join in and say a wig would be a much easier and better option... Make sure also that if you order offline you can see a picture of the wig. It would suck if instead of a "carrot" colored wig you ended up with fire engine red... Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry.

Neither had I until last summer, when I purchased a lovely Lacey online. It isn't adjustable and was never meant to be and was decidedly not returnable. Too bad because it's really a fantastic wig. Someday, when I am older, maybe my head will shrink so I can wear it.

But hey, if that wig had fit, I never would have had the pleasure of attempting to temporarily dye my natural red locks black and scaring my husband, children and cast in one fell swoop!
