Re:Awkward stage presence? - 2008/01/29 14:35 ahh yes the BE NATURAL speech, there is nothing NATURAL about acting you have to ACT Natural.

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is to OVERDO it and then back down from there. It is better to give more than to not give anything.

Acting isn't real life, and your motions, stance, arm movements etc are not probably what you would do in real life.

Many times the actions are larger for the stage, unless it is a small blackbox or something, but in general, bigger usually reads "Natural"

One suggestion I always give is - DON'T BE QUICK!
Make the gesture LAST.. HOLD IT.. no, you wouldn't do that in real life but, on stage again, it looks natural and you give 300 to 400 or more people in the audience the chance to see what you are doing.. (just in case they aren't looking at you)

I actually teach a movement class... it is called
"What to do with these D**N HANDS"
I give it 4 times a year and it is sold out months in advance.. guess people understand that your body and not just your voice is acting as well.
If your in a larger city, there might be similar classes?

Re:Awkward stage presence? - 2008/02/04 20:06 I think you should just relax and think more about getting into the character. How is "the character" you are auditioning for going to react. If you and the character are one - you wouldn't be thinking about how you look or what face expression you should make. Otherwise, you will look too technical and fake. If you are just singing a song to get into a class, it is the same thing. Who is the character, what does the character want, how does the character plan to get it, etc? Do your "acting" homework. It is the same planning that it takes to plan a scene or monologue. If you think in that way, you will come across on stage more natural. If you are into the character you are playing, all those other negative thoughts won't be there. I am in a scene acting class. My teacher also teaches a musical performance class. Some students take both classes. Often a student will do their song as a monologue in the acting class. Try that to get started. Research the character and be that character.
