^Yeah, because, if you're not being paid, it's technically volunteer work. That's how I get my volunteer hours.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/01/18 09:29Here's another I'm not a fan of- people who don't read the script. In Secret School right now, the cast is great, but they didn't read their scripts before the read-through, which we were instructed to do. I was crazy happy over my part, so I had read it, like, four times and also read the book. But because so many people hadn't read it, the director assumed I hadn't either. I didn't want to be like, "But I did. Many times." I don't understand how you can resist reading the script. If I love a play, I read it constantly.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/01/18 11:20People who don't realize that they way they look DOES have an impact on how the audience relates to their character.
I did grease this summer, it was double-cast (yuck). the second sandy decided to change her hair from a reddish color to really dark brown the day before we opened, making her hair darker than rizzo's. which was kind of not the director's vision, and she didn't see why this could possibly be a problem.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/01/20 15:42People who talk on stage while the soloist are doing their stuff. Also, people who interfere with other actors choices, by meanly critiquing- subtly (or not so much) suggesting they would be better for the role. And another one... people(ensamble) who don't do their blocking because they are too lazy. I understand when people have a lot of blocking and accidently drop a line, but when someone knows their blocking and just is too lazy too do it..
Also, this probably doesn't count, but getting sick, and having to go to school so you can go to rehearsal.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/28 02:30We have volunteer parents who come in and monitor backstage, which makes me feel like I'm seven again, and the parents always try to watch the show from the wings... in full view of the audience.
So for one show, this lady whose kid was in THE OTHER SHOW volunteered to help keep us quiet. It could have been a nice thought, but she waltzes in when the house first opens *we were talking quietly in the green room* and she yells at us about how the audience can hear us and proceeds to give us a lecture about who's boss. Come on, we're all in high school now.
That was a terrible show backstage. She was so controlling and made us move out of the way to 'keep the wings clear' even when we were waiting for our cues. At least cranky stage managers know the show and understand something about how the theatre works-
sorry, had to vent. I'm all better now. -Ali

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/28 03:20stage hands who REFUSE to get out of your way. I totally knocked a lady over because I had, like, 3 seconds to get from one end of the stage to the other, and she didn't move for me, so I moved her.
stage hands who try to make things more "efficient" or "cleaner" and move things that you have pre-set for quick changes or props that you need for the next scene.
no stage hands
people who dont appreciate stage hands
noisy kids
crying babies
old people falling asleep in the audience and snore VERY loudly
cast who don't take care of their costumes.
I love the theatre!
Edited because I can't STAND bad grammer...

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/28 10:101. actors who don't do their presets. Hey it's not my problem if you don't know where your pants are, but you're going onstage with or without, capisce?
2. untrained stage hands, (sorry to say this happens alot in community or even semi-pro theatre). You do not move an actor's prop or costume without talking to the actor and/or the stage manager, even if it is "fun to play with" it may be pre-set for a quick change, and god forbid you break it... If you don't have a reason to be in the wings, then stay out of the way.
3. negativity, I really really really don't have the energy to listen to how fat, how old, or how out of shape you are. it accomplishes nothign for you to b**** about how badly you dance or bemoan why you got cast in such a hard role. Can't Hack it? then don't accept the role.
4. diva-tude. "Please" and "Thank You"... Learn it, Live it.Chris

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/28 11:04Matinee performances with eighth graders in the audience on field trips. Normally it's fun, because then you see them hanging out at the mall and they're like 'oh, good job on the play' and you feel famous (that happened to me three times yesterday- and they knew my name!)
But the complaint is this: One guy in the second row was texting (I'd imagine someone else in the audience) for the entire show. Come on, seriously. a) disrespectful, b) breaks all of the actors' focus
also, one kid's mom (here we go with stage mothers again) takes pictures for the show. I looked at the galleries for Wonderful Life- I had a pretty large role as Violet, her kid's role was small as one of George's kids- and there is one picture of me flirting with george. That's it. Out of exactly 73 photos. Her kid has about 20 featuring him- grr, more venting...and my friend, who played Mary Bailey, didn't have any pictures aside from ensemble ones. I don't think the photographer uploaded all of the pictures, most of the second act is gone.

seriously, that is appaulling behavior, exemplary of how little ettiquette training is happening in kids lives these days. Am I the only person who remembers being TAUGHT how to behave? (sorry tangent).
I like shows where the 4th wall is ... bendable. The last show i did was set in a night club so the audience for our show was also the audience IN the show... so the lead actors could speak to them directly, and they had no problem ad-libbing something if someone were to be using their phone or whatever. We actually kinda wished it would happen so we could hear what they'd say. Chris

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/29 00:14I absolutely cannot stand when people audition for and get cast in a show at the communtiy theatre I frequent, and then miss half the rehearsals because they're in another show that is "more important."
Do they realize how hard it is to rehearse without your LEAD? Or half your chorus? Harmonies cannot be taught to 7 people when there are 15 people singing them in the show!
Sorry. We have a group of teens doing a show right now (me included) and half of them are all in another show and therefore cannot show up to our rehearsals. This usually leads to the rest of us having to either look for costumes (productive, but monotnous after doing it many times) or just go home. I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!
Currently: Taking a much needed BREAK!
Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma.

Like in 'Spelling Bee'! I've always wanted to do a show like that. There are shows where I've had a monologue focused at the audience, but that would be awesome: 'ladies and gentlemen, the kit kat klub is proud to present- young man with the red shirt in the third row, get off your phone- the toast of mayfair...'
~choreographers who change things the day before the show
Apparently this happens often on Broadway, especially with new shows. My friend who was on bway for awhile said they would stay up late learning a new routine and then, when they came in the next morning the choreographer would say that the writer or director didn't like it and they'd redo it. It's only happened to me twice, and then once a director had new blocking for a scene the morning we went on when the house was already open, so we couldn't practice it. THankfully, it was all good!

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/29 13:26-When people skip rehearsals for stupid reasons (like, ooh, there's a dance tonight, I have to leave rehearsal 2 hours before the dance starts to get my hair done, completely disregarding the fact that the show opens in less than 2 weeks!). This has been happening a ton with our play lately.
-When people refuse to go to shows from other schools. That's kind of hypocritcal for me to say, since I definitely don't go to all of them, but I try to see as many from other schools as I can.
I'm sure I'll have more later... - Caitlin / Cait -
