Where's my falsetto????? - 2008/02/09 19:17 In October I played Dean in All Shook Up which had me belting at the very top of my range. (I am a 17 year old Tenor/Baritone) Prior to the show I had the most beautiful falsetto that could sing mezzo with the best of them. As you can probably tell it was something I was very proud of. Well, during that show I lost my falsetto completely. Like, literally, completely. It just vanished. Now even when I even attempt to access it, all that comes out is air and maybe a high-pitched crack and a few squeaks. Another symptom that arose was the decrease of the higher notes in my range. A whole week of vocal rest didn’t help (and I didn't even so much as giggle) so I sought out an ENT specialist, but he said there was nothing wrong with my vocal chords aside from a bit of swelling. He thought it could be due to acid reflux, so he started me on Nexium, but it still hasn't gotten any better. I knew it couldn't have been from the acid reflux because the symptoms were practically overnight and so drastic that it would be impossible. Besides, the show I could tell was doing something bad to my voice. I knew it was foolish for me to continue with the show but I did anyway and I kick myself over it every time I try to sing a high note. PLEASE help me! I have been desperately looking everywhere for answers and can't seem to find anyone who can help me, I'm starting to panic! My falsetto is completely gone and my upper range is dimishing!!!!!!! It's gotten so bad that I had to cancel and audition to one of my top colleges. SOS!!

Re:Where's my falsetto????? - 2008/02/09 20:23 Your voice may be just changing. You're only 17, your voice doesn't completely develop until late 20's or early 30's. It might come back, it might not; only time will tell. Jessica

Actually, the male voice matures a bit earlier than the female voice - but I think there is more to it than that anyway.

Are you seeing a voice teacher? If not, I really think you need to start. It is quite possible that you aren't using proper technique and that is what is causing your range to change so drastically.

Without actually seeing and hearing you, it is impossible for anyone here to tell you what is going on with your voice. You need a one-on-one diagnosis. I strongly urge you to go and see a vocal instructor - although the ENT was a good start, often they don't know much about singing specifically.

Re:Where's my falsetto????? - 2008/02/10 23:44 I totally know what you're talking about! I'm a Tenor who's also really proud of his falsetto ability. When I was sophomore, my choral director did really belty songs most of the year, and he wanted us to use as little falsetto as possible. Then, my junior year, I found that most of my higher notes had vanished! I was really terrified, but kept practicing my falsetto, even though it was a terrible series of sqawks and cracks. After a few weeks it came back. So, along with everyone else's advice, that's what I would suggest! Micah---
