Cole Porter and other traditional songs - 2008/01/30 22:12 so...im in need of a new song to work on for my MTP class (music theatre presentation) and i am kinda lost.

my vocal teacher told me to look up some Cole Porter tunes, but i am kinda at a loss in regards to his songs that arent extremely overdone.

im primarily a soprano, but i sing alto, mezzo and have a decent enough belt (although Cole doesnt really write much belter peices, does he)

so if anyone could make some suggestions id be much abliged

also, if theres any other traditional pieces (aka pre Cabaret) that arent Cole Porter and arent too overdone write 'em on down too!
Nikki!!

Re:Cole Porter and other traditional songs - 2008/01/30 22:20 When it comes to the old stuff (I consider Cole Porter early MT) you gotta look at old film musicals. In the early years composers didn't always write complete shows, they wrote individual songs that were then used in films - sometimes more than one. This is why "super-musicals" were made for some of these popular composers, to put all the most popular songs in one show to create a certain moneymaker. Those songs that DIDN'T make it into one of these shows are often not well known.

If you read a good detailed biography of Cole Porter (or any other early MT composers), you'll get a decent list of songs that he contributed to various films. That should give you a good starting point.

HTH!
