missing school? - 2008/01/25 18:43 I have an opportunity to go to an assisted living home for mentally handicapped people in a few weeks. It's the only hour they could take our cast, which portrays these kinds of people in our show currently being rehearsed. It's a small cast, and a great-sounding experience just to talk to them, but I have one problem: It's during school.

I wouldn't be making a fuss, but we're planning on going the first day of the new semester, and I have all-new classes that I don't want to miss. There are only two other people in the cast that have the same problem I do.

What should I do? School or the cast thing? -Ali

Currently:
-Sheila; Boys Next Door (postshow depression mode)
-acceptance to acting ensemble
-Bye Bye Birdie (audition- didn't get a callback)

Re:missing school? - 2008/01/25 20:28 My recommendation is "do the show". I speak from experience, because I teach Speech in a public high school in the suburbs of Chicago. The first week (or even two weeks) of school is this "musical chairs" of students anyway. I had one kid get transferred from my 4th period class to my 6th period class (?). Kids come and go so rapidly that first week that I just give very superfluous assignments anyway.

If you want to get in good with your teachers, either go see them or e-mail them (use the school's e-mail program. I would never reply to an e-mail from a student if it were on a Yahoo or AOL e-mail, because the school has no way to monitor it) and tell him/her what is going on and ask if you can pick up a copy of the syllabus (if there is one). Ask your new teacher, "what assignments will I miss?" Ask them if you can make up the homework or even turn it in early. Trust me, any right-thinking teacher will have the greatest respect for you if you do that.

Re:missing school? - 2008/01/26 14:12 I agree, I say definitely do the show! As stated above, the first day is mostly a here-are-the-rules-are-you-in-the-right-class day.

I've missed a few days of school this year for auditions/ performances, and it's really not so hard to make up. It's only one day, so I day definitely go for it! Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.
