just got sick! audition in two days! - 2008/04/27 18:38okay, so i have and audition on Tuesday for Eponine in Les Mis, and first off: I haven't got the perfect song just yet... and I have to settle on one AND decide whether to have the accompanist play along, or sing to a background cd... second: my allergies have been acting up the last few weeks and I've taken TONS of meds for them... but just these past few days it developed into something more than just allergy problems... so my voice isn't at it's best... so to my question: Would the song "the dark I know well" from spring awakening be an okay song to sing? and does anyone know any kind of "last minute" remedies to help with my voice?"Me? Gimme a bottle o' bourbon and a half a chicken, and I'll conquer the world!"

Re:just got sick! audition in two days! - 2008/04/27 22:02I KNOW that this isn't the answer that you want to hear, However, I personally wouldn't audition. If you're sick, you haven't decided on a song yet, and the audition is two days away, you're not going to put your best foot forward. There will be more shows that will come along.Auditioning For- Bye Bye Birdie (Hoping for Kim for Ursula)

Don't listen to negative talk. Just because you are sick doesn't mean not to audition. I've walked into auditions with no voice at all and told them I was sick. I asked permission to try at the call backs. I'm talking union jobs in NYC, not community theatre. The auditioners could actually hear the sickness as I spoke, but you know what --- they all called me back to a call-back to give me a chance! During the audition, I explained that I was sick - that way they could hear how awful my throat sounded. So, don't ever NOT go to an audition just because you are sick - unless you can't get out of bed, or you have a fever that is too high. Besides, in a couple of days, you might be much better.
I wouldn't worry that much about what song at this point. If you don't have anything specific prepared, just go in and do your best song. Or, the one where you can actually hit all the notes (depending on your illness). Do the best you can. Break a Leg!!!

Re:just got sick! audition in two days! - 2008/05/01 19:06I agree with Jbug and MM. I auditioned for Seussical two weeks ago. I am not a great singer and I certainly can't dance, but I auditioned with a lot of people who WERE supurb singers who sang like they were asleep. I put an much energy and charm and chutzpah into it as I could - guess who I DIDN'T see at the call-backs?
Go in there and be so electric that they would rather kick themselves in the pants than not cast you. If they are so damned dumb as to take a pass on you because you have a sinus infection, they wouldn't know real talent if you walked in on fire!

As for last minute remedies: Get lots of rest, drink a lot of water, & take some vitamin C. My mom always used to tell me to eat a spoon full of honey to sooth the throat. I'm not sure how well that works, but I've tried it before and it seemed to help a bit. Also, gargling with warm salt water is supposed to help get rid of bacteria or something.

Re:just got sick! audition in two days! - 2008/05/02 23:33DRINK WATER. It is most important. Tea with lemon helps get rid of excess mucus, and Tea with honey gets rid of a dry throat. GET LOTS OF SLEEP. Suck on hard candy, Halls Vitamin C drops are amazing. Relax. Remember that life still goes on outside of the building you are auditioning in. Trust me, I went into my Sound of Music auditions with a 101 degree fever (i didnt know that at the time, but i knew i was SICK) but I gave all that I had, and I got called back, despite the cracking of my voice and stuffy sound. Of course, right after I walked out of the audition, I collapsed.... Never give less than 100%!!! It will ALWAYS come back to haunt you if you don't.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie
