college audition songs - 2008/04/30 03:06 so I'm thinking "The Beauty Is" from the Light in the Piazza and "Look at Me Now" from The Wild Party for my MT program audtion songs next year. Any downsides to these choices? Besides the ridiculous difficulty level of "The Beauty Is"'s accomaniment?

Re:college audition songs - 2008/04/30 04:57 Definitely overdone, would avoid. Also not contrasting enough, both modern MT. You want one classic MT song in there and one that is really uptempo/character to contrast a good all in one ballad. Look at some older stuff....

Re:college audition songs - 2008/04/30 08:32 I agree with above. I didn't have an MT audition, but for the music department I did Giants in the Sky and then a german piece (Verborgenheit, if you are terribly interested). A classical/uptempo is a very easy contrast. I'm also currently preparing "Lost in the Wilderness"/"Johanna" Currently Auditioning for: Narnia

Currently involved with: Nothing...

Re:college audition songs - 2008/04/30 08:36 I would keep in mind that anything from Sweeney Todd is bound to be even more overdone than it usually is due to the recent movie.

Re:college audition songs - 2008/05/01 19:10 I love "The Beauty Is" too, but I wouldn't ask a pianist to sight-read Guettel.

You could keep "Look at Me Now" and then choose a more classic soprano ballad. Think Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, or even Gershwin. Maybe

"Love, Look Away" from Flower Drum Song
"I Have Dreamed" from The King and I
"My White Knight" from The Music Man

You know, stuff like that. Break a leg!
