Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/05 11:46 I'm auditioning for an upcoming community theatre's spring musical, Grease. Auditions are this Saturday and Monday. Does it really matter what day I audition?

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/05 11:50 As long as you are not required to be there both days (some auditions have singing audition one day & dancing another day & everyone is required to be present for both), then it really shouldn't matter. If you have a personal preference for going first, last or in the middle then I'd just try to work with what works best for you. Break a leg! Favorite Shows: Wicked, Hairspray, A Chorus Line & Spamalot
Dream Roles: Ado Annie/Oklahoma, Galinda/Wicked
In production: Ti Moune in Once On this Island Jr
Upcoming Auditions: The Music Man, McKinney Has Talent contest

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/06 19:26 When I use to do community theatre - audition days were like big social gatherings. All my other theatre friends would be there. I'd always go both days. Sometimes I got more than 1 audition out of it!

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/07 18:35 We had two days of auditions for the show I am doing now (where I am assistant director). I would say from the view of the audition panel, go on the first day and earlier if you have a time choice. The panel is still excited about auditions, there is less chance they are already sick of your song, and they are not frustrated from seeing one bad audition after another at that point.

That was one of the HUGE things I learned while auditioning people. I put people through on the first day that I would never have even considered on the second day. Your perception is just totally different at the start of auditions then at the end.
I'm Samantha. But you can call me Sam.

Favorite Roles:
Rosie - Bye, Bye Birdie
Mrs. Paroo - The Music Man

Current Role: Footloose - Eleanor Dunbar (also Assistant Director)

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/10 01:32 well, i just thought i'd throw my two cent's worth in. my singing teacher who was helping me prepare for an audition told me to go on the last day because the last people they see are the ones freshest in their minds when they are casting the show. she was also on the panel judging the auditions so she should know.

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/21 13:13 Ugh! This is a hard one! You see, you already have totally opposite opinions posted. This is something that is stressing me out too as I am trying to break into the local community theatre as a new person and I have already auditioned for previous shows unsuccessfully...

Pros and cons for both:

First day: Fresh ears for directors/producers listening BUT... may not remember you as well at the final decision process...

Second (or last) day: These auditioners are freshest in the mind BUT...
Could have already met someone they want to cast before you even walked it...

Hmmmm.. Okay, still don't know. Or, you could be like Jbug and just come to all days! HA HA! I like that idea. (If they already know you from previous shows this might be okay, otherwise might be looked at as stalking! HA HA )
Currently playing: Lily! (Secret Garden)
YAYAYAYAY!

the things you fear
are undefeatable
not by their nature
but by your approach

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/23 20:34 There is no "right" answer to this - there are too many variables.

The best time for you to audition is the best day for YOU - look at your calendar and choose the day where you have the least other things going on and you will be able to adequately prepare.

If an audition panel really wants you, it won't matter when you auditioned.

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/26 14:58 For "Beauty and the Beast" there were two audition days. I went on the first, but then went again on the second (just to check out the competition), and actually got a chance to re-audition.

The first day the pianist was HORRIBLE! The casting director realized this and allowed everyone who wanted to audition again.

But then again, I had just finished a show with the company and had friends auditioning on both days, so it was for social purposes as well.

But do what you feel comfortable doing!
Current Role:
Lumiere in "Beauty and the Beast"

In Production:
Scarecrow in "The Wiz"

Past Roles:
Seargant in "Pirates of Penzance"
Prince in "Cinderella's Glass Slipper"

Upcoming Auditions: Thoroughly Modern Millie, Annie, Into the Woods.

Re:Does it matter which day I audition? - 2008/03/27 12:33 For me it is honestly feeling and opinion.

I like to use extra days for last minute preparation, but always feel better going nearer to first. My previous director in a Audition Workshop he put on, admitted the earlier on in the day or week, the more impressive and attentive he could be, honest at least.

It depends on how the theater group runs, your feelings on it, and the competition level.
Mystery becomes malice,
Shrouds become walls.
