Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 12:09 Have you ever listened to the ORIGINAL Broadway (or London, or whatever) Cast and then heard/seen a REVIVAL Cast production and actually liked the Revival better? I always seem to like whoever I heard sing the number first the best, but the other day I listened to Patti LuPone's Mrs. Lovett and I prefer it by far to Angela Lansbury. Any thoughts? Current Role: Louise Lerman/Eve (Judy's Assistant) in "Ruthless!" by Marvin Laird.
Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry.

Re:Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 12:39 Totally agree in most cases. I think it is because talent of the actors/singers gets better and better. Also, sometimes the writers take advantage of the opportunity to improve their own work, fixing things that maybe they weren't happy with the 1st time around. Older works where the writers aren't around anymore, other folks improve things. I've got some old shows with the original singers and they weren't all that good at singing! Today, that would never happen. Talent is a dime a dozen and they can find outstanding singers to sing roles that weren't all that great before. Often orchestrations are improved. One thing I liked was when CD's came out, they started putting music that wasn't recorded before. On old albums, there wasn't always room to put entire scores. Today, you get everything recorded which is so much better.

I will say that I've heard that even though Patti LuPone is a better singer, folks who saw the original staging of the Angela Lansbury production with all the sets and costumes of the period like it better staging wise. But I haven't seen the new version yet, so I don't know. I have seen Ms. Lansbury's version and loved that production.

Re:Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 12:55 Yeah. I've only heard the music, not seen the staging. Current Role: Louise Lerman/Eve (Judy's Assistant) in "Ruthless!" by Marvin Laird.
Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry.

Re:Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 14:15 Ooooh I definetly think so! The movie version of Oklahoma! recording just did not compare to the professional production I saw by a touring company a couple of years ago.

But thats only one example. I'm sure there are a lot more.

Re:Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 16:40 It all depends on the show. I prefer the revivals of Little Shop and Anything Goes (only the music, though), but some shows are just better as the original ~Sarah~

Upcoming: Grease and Guys and Dolls

Past Shows: Godspell, Damn Yankees, Little Shop of

Re:Can Revivals Be Better Than the Originals? - 2008/04/30 21:04 yeah, I agree- it depends. but I didn't like certain people in the OBC/OLC of Les Mis (randy graff, frances ruffle). I think every actor can bring something new to a part. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not so much.

Good DQ, by the way.
