Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/20 16:13the ONE time i play a guy in the middle school production, and suddenly whenever we're reading scripts in drama everyone's always like "Oh, SHE can play a man!" I've played a guy 5 times after the Middle School musical...
I like to play my own gender sometimes...~ Kaitlin ~ Always Rockin The Boat ~
Favorite Shows: Young Frankenstein, Curtains, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers Dream Roles that I have NO CHANCE of Getting Because of Something i Have no control over: Ulla from the Producers or Inga from Young Frankenstein (neither tall nor blonde - such a shame too, because this is one of my favorite "character roles" to play), Igor from Young Frankenstein (i'm no man, no matter how many times i play one), Gary Coleman from Avenue Q (skin color) SEEING ON MARCH 29TH ON BROADWAY - YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ^^ AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/20 19:26My characters tend to be whiny and/or outspoken, and generally difficult. My voice teacher LOVES musical theatre (I LOVE my voice teacher for that (and many other reasons, but especially that)) so we do musical theater for music festival. I have done;
Woe is Me- Spelling Bee Just a Housewife- Working Little Known Facts- Your a Good Man Charlie Brown No Good Deed- Wicked
Plus for acting; Vicki- Caught in the Net Drunk- Condensed version of Little Shop for a pitch to a theatre company Simeon's Wife/Hairy Ishmalite/ Ensemble/ Female Soloist- Joseph (i pretty much sit on a high A. eww Pond Princess- Happily Never After Arguer/ receptionist/ head hitter- Argument Clinic (one-act festival) + many roles in drama projects
and to top it all off, I am doing joseph, HNA, and argument clinic, + 15 entries in a one week music festival, and my drama teacher (gr 12 drama) who is IN joseph with me, has decided that because I am only in 2 one acts with large roles instead of small roles in 3 one acts, I need to be the director of 2 of them. (can you tell I'm stressing?!?!)
I know what doesnt kill me makes me stronger, but.... what if it does kill me.
PS. I LOVE my typecast. I'm currently being considered for Eliza in My Fair Lady. yay!Lissa

Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/20 20:16I always get the "innocent" of the "naive young one". I get why I get the young one because I am the youngest in my class/ thespian troupe/ cast.
I hate playing the innocent it's so unexciting! Back in Middle school I got Glinda the Good Witch and the whole time I was thinking "Kill me... just kill me now...." . I don't like playing a person that is too innocent or perfect. It's so boring!

Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/20 21:39This isn't really typecasting by appearance, but I am always cast in a mostly singing/little speaking role, whether it be chorus or a featured part with like, three lines (like Rose in Alice in Wonderland). I'd like to talk every once in a while, thanks! I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!
Currently: Taking a much needed BREAK!
Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma.

That is what i usually get too!!! It is mostly because i am one of the youngest in the theatre company i'm in, so i get one or two lines. Luckily next season, i will be one of the oldest!!! -Laura
Favorite Musical: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!!!! As for more "happy" musicals i like BATB, Music Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Singin' in the rain!!!
Next production: R&H Cinderella?

Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/24 00:37I have a pretty small range in which I can sing well so I am most usually given the parts without much of a singing role like Smee in Peter Pan or Vince Fontaine in Grease but its fun to be character roles, I just wish I could play a leading role once in my life heh.

Re:Typecasting - 2008/03/26 18:41The roles I usually get generally are older because of my height (13 and 5'6). Also the roles I usually don't get are the ones that require people to fall in love/get married etc. I'm kind of a talker singer so I won't have as much singing to do either unless the songs the character sings are in the lower range."Doctor Who, Doctor Who, does whatever a doctor can do.."
PREVIOUSLY: Sister Magaretta in The Sound Of Music
CURRENTLY: Les Misérables directed by Ivan Rutherford ))
UP COMING: Senior Ensemble's next show

Re:Typecasting - 2008/04/05 19:25I am usually one of three types of roles. Old and Creepy (Mr. Sowerberry and Vince Fontaine) Scary (Shere Khan) or stupid (Smee) I am fine with that cause I like those types of parts but some day I would love to play a lead at least once...

Re:Typecasting - 2008/04/25 19:36I normally play the mother roles or the mean girl roles...
I'm very maternal so it doesn't bother me as much but I don't see where anyone would think I was mean...Currently in: You're a Good Man Charlie Brown rehearsals (Lucy)
Recently: We All Fall Down (Capt. Timmons)
Auditioning for Next: Nothing for a while! I'm tired! lol

Re:Typecasting - 2008/04/25 23:37In high school theatre I usually get little kid roles, mostly because of my size. CT gives me a chance to make up for it though. I get all sorts of roles, and I love it.
I have one friend who always gets the villian, no matter what. It's weird, because she's one of the nicest people I've met, but she's such a great actress and she always pulls it off. This isn't a golf tournament, being loud is more than acceptable!

Re:Typecasting - 2008/04/28 17:06The closest I've come to typecasting was being Jack from Into the Woods, but I didn't really mind it then. Being the Wolf/Cinderella's Prince or the Baker would have been cool but Jack was still downright fun. Once, I might have been anti-typecast, I don't know. I wouldn't put it past my director (this was a high school show, so the learning was good), but I am rather nerdy and intellectual and he had me play a simple mountain high (the Father from Violet). Typecasting can be annoying, but it is relatively harmless. There are alternatives which are less appealing.Currently Auditioning for: Narnia
Currently involved with: Nothing...

Re:Typecasting - 2008/04/30 10:32I've basically played three types of roles in the many years I've been doing theater.
1. The Early Years: the whore/slut. I was told it's because I have vibrant red hair and big boobs. Somewhere along the line, my acting might have had something to do with it.
2. The Middle Years: chorus or nothing. I have never been the "lead" type (but mostly because I'm not a great enough singer).
3. The Current Years: the Mother (has to do with age) or the drunk (because I am extremely good at doing that on stage).
For me, I'm finding that the older I get, the more varied my parts are becoming. Yes, I do play a lot of mothers and/or drunks, but they are also solid character roles that I'm given because the director thinks or knows I can handle it (example: this fall I played Rebecca Nurse in "The Crucible": she was certainly the motherly type, but she was cool because she was 30 years older than I really am, so I had an added challenge).Andrea
