National Tour of Avenue Q Review

People say that musicals and broadway are dying out, but from the considerable amounts of laughter that filled the Wharton Center at Michigan State University on April 18th, I'd have to say that "Avenue Q" proved them wrong!

"Avenue Q" starts the way any unelightened person expecting it to be a puppet show would; with a "Sesame Street"-esque cartoon. Cute and enjoyable, the show then segways into the opening song "Avenue Q Theme" and immediately into "What do you do with a B.A. in English?/It Sucks To Be Me." The energy of the song (and cast) greatly brought it to life, and the audience.

Rent - National Tour Review

As a Renthead, walking into a theatre set up for a production of Rent is like walking home. The show that I saw from the current national tour cast (specifically on Jan 19th, 2008 in Providence, RI) was my fourth time seeing it live, and was certainly a treat. It's a show supported by the strength of the individual leads and each should be evaluated on their own. Everyone has their own requirements but overall, they've got to have great pipes, believable acting, a clear enough voice for newcomers, and the ability to stick to the original choreography while bringing something new to the part.

Colin Larkin's Encyclopedia of Stage & Film Musicals became part of my collection when it caught my eye during a late-night wandering in a used book store. Since then it has quickly become my first reference whenever I need information on a particular composer or show, and has earned a permanent place of honour on my desk.
