Spring Awakening National Tour Review |

NOTE: There are spoilers in here (plot summary).
Unlike my previous reviews, I have NEVER seen "Spring Awakening" performed before, so this is review is truly a review of the performance, not a review of a comparison.
So, arriving at "Spring Awakening" I was so surprised, the audience consisted of many elderly folk! It was great, that had a LOT to say about the show; "My the youth of today!" "Did you see what he was doing?" and of course "Wow Barb, this is nothing like Wicked!"
It was a great show, it started off with Christy Altomare as Wendla performing "Mama Who Bore Me" she did a really lovely job, she made the song sound sweet (like Wendla!), but not like she couldn't suppport it/breathy quality. She also handled the movement well to add to Wendla's precociousness. When she finishes, Angela Reed comes in, this time as Wendla's mother (as the adult female, she plays all the adult female roles, Wendla's Mom, Melchior's Mom, The Headmistress, Moritz's Mom, etc), and she has GREAT comedic timing. I had no idea this musical was so funny! Reading the Wikipedia summary, I was prepared for tears from beginning to end -- Not the case!

Learning Something New Every Day (OTT) |

I am learning so much in this production; about Equity, about being a professional actor, and about acting itself.
The biggest thing that I'm still trying to wrap my head around is that I really need to chill out a little bit. While I definitely have lots of fun at rehearsals and backstage, I get very, very serious when it comes to shows. When dress/tech rehearsals start, I snap out of fun mode and into serious mode. A lot of people have commented on this in previous companies, and it's just something that I do. In this cast, it's not as noticeable because, even though only three of the cast members are actually in Equity, all of us except (ironically) the lead have been in professional productions before. However, I am starting to realise that sometimes, I just take things too seriously.

Workshop-Style or Group Auditions |
|
Written by triplethreat

Sometimes, theatre groups will hold workshop style auditions instead of the standard one-at-a-time, one song/monologue type auditions.
In a workshop audition, you will be with a group of other auditioners. You will usually be taught a song as a group and may do some improv games. In the case of a musical theatre audition, you will usually have an opportunity to sing by yourself, but it is usually a song you are given rather than one you have prepared.
The audition announcements for this type of audition may state you do not need to prepare anything, but do not be fooled! There is much you can do to prepare, and it may just give you the edge you need.
