Meet Our Contestants: Megan Herzing

MTA: What got you hooked on musical theatre?

Megan: Ever since elementary school i have loved to sing. I never really started really acting until middle school when i was involved with some one act plays. Then high school came and i knew i was hooked when i got an ensemble part in Grease, I am a very energetic person and i found that musical theatre was a good way to release my energy and it was crazy fun! I know that this is what I'm supposed to do!

MTA: What is your favorite past performing experience? What did you love about it? or What achievement are you most proud of?

Megan: Definitely my favorite performance was being a part of the production Godspell my sophomore year of high school in which i played "Gilmer"! Not only was it my first lead part, but it was actually the first time i really got to show what i could do. Godspell is just such a fun show because you can put so much of yourself into your character and just make the whole show your own! The whole cast was really close and we all got along so well . Doing that show was definitely my greatest accomplishment and memory!

MTA: Do you often perform with the same group of people? How do you think this effects the show as a whole?

Megan: Yes I usually do . Most of the shows I perfom in are at my high school and besides graduating seniors and such its usually all the same people. I think most of the time its affects the show in a positive way becasue we all know each other so well , and we are mostly friends and can connect with each other. Sometimes for auditions and such it can cause a negative effect because we are friends, and if one person gets a part the other wanted it can be hard.

MTA: What is your "dream role"?

Megan: Well I usually go for the comedic ,random, very energetic roles in theatre because i feel that's my strong suit. I love being funny and making people smile! So considering that my dream role would have to be "SALLY" from You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. Shes so fun and i love the song "My New Philosophy". I saw a video of Kristen Chenoweth doing it and the next day i bought the karaoke and learned it!

MTA: Who has been your biggest supporter of your growth as a performer?

Megan: Definitely my Best friend Liz - she is a performer too. We are always there for each other when it comes to auditions and trying out for solo's in chorus and stuff. Shes always the one sitting there saying "GO MEGAN!" and if I ever think I'm not good enough to do something or I don't believe in myself shes always there telling me to shut up and "go get em' " ! I hope one day we can make it to Broadway together!

MTA: Why did you enter this contest?

Megan: Well, I entered because i really love getting feedback on my performing even if its bad criticism. The judges comments on my songs in this competition will definitely help me with the things i need to work on! And since I have never had private lessons or anything and never really gotten any feedback from professionals before its a very good experience for me. Also by looking through the different era's and types of musical theatre i am learning a lot of music and facts i never knew before! Its really fun too, because during the summer i don't get to sing a lot because I'm not in school so, every chance i get to sing is taken!

MTA: Do you have any plans for further training?

Megan: Im considering going into dance classes and I would like to get voice lessons in the future to expand my range.

MTA: Who would you really love to work with?

Megan: Kristin Chenoweth is definitely someone id love to meet, but if I performed with her I'd be embarrassed because she is so good, lol, but it'd still be fun to perform with her. Also another of my favorite people who are in musical theatre would be Sherie Renee Scott and Idina Menzel , they would be great to perform with!

MTA: Anything else you'd like us to know?

Megan: I'm looking forward to the rest of this competition! Right now i'm looking into a lot of colleges for next year, and so far i'm planning on going for musical theatre .. : )
